Digital Imaging 1 Adjustment Layers

Add a new adjustment layer from the Adjustments tab (use levels)

This add a bunch of features to your pallet

1. it adds the levels adjustment as a layer, as you can see from the thubnail. By clicking on this thubnail you will aways be able to change these ajustments.

2. to return to the other ajustments in the tab click the arrow on the side.

3. to hide this ajustment (without deleating it) click the eye

4. to temporaraly hide the last move you performed in the ajustment use this eye, or the circular arrow to revert.

5. you can toss this adjustment with the trash can.

Using Camera Raw

When you open a raw file (.dng, .cr2, .raw or whatever format your camera chooses) photoshop will open this dialogue box:

Note the important areas: Navigation side (if you open multiple images), Tool Bar (zoom and crop), Histogram, and your basic image editing tools.

From here you may edit your images, however you do three things, either open the image in photoshop (for further editing), save the image (bypassing photoshop), or click done and leave the updated RAW file in place.

Don’t forget the little blue bar at the bottom that lets us change the bit depth to 16

So, for this assignment open your raw image, edit it, now open it up in photoshop.

From here go to File/Save as… to save this as a PSD

Using Bridge

Lets go over the points covered in our class on using Bridge.

Juan taught me this trick and I will share it with you. When starting up bridge hold down the three keys: “command option shift” as you click on the icon, this will bring up this dialogue box:

Choose reset preferences. If you are working on your home computer you don’t need to do this, but at school anyone who uses Bridge before you will have changed the settings and Bridge could open in any configuration imaginable.

Now when you open Bridge it will default to the simplest and most informative setting. Remember to click on “Folders” for you folder tree, and check the “Essentials” is clicked.

Don’t forget that you can move any of these spaces around with by grabbing the handles:

2. Starting Images

Open your selected folder and single click an images within the content section. You can now move through your images using either your arrow keys or by single clicking with your mouse (avoid double clicking as it will open your image).

Now star your best images be clicking on the desired stars in the preview section:

Or by using the shortcut: hold the command button and press 1-5 (for the desired number of stars) this is much faster for moving through a lot of images.

3. Batch ReNane and file management

First choose a name, simple and to the point, this name will be in your folder and tagged to each of your images. Now in the content area of Bridge click on a single image, use the “command A” shortcut to select all of your images. Double check that the “Sort by Filename” feature is clicked to insure that the images are in order.
